WHAT MAKES YOUR RECORDING SPECIAL?
Here’s a question: 99% of a cappella recordings are already AutoTuned, sliced, and pasted into digital perfection. That’s old news. So what will make your recording stand out from the rest?
Clever song choices. Ingenious arranging. Impassioned singing.
And, very importantly, the creativity of your producer.
Others may sound good. But your music can sound unforgettable.
Tat Tong’s production instincts combine a keen commercial sense for what works – honed by years of working on chart-topping mainstream pop music with top major labels (Sony, Warner, Universal), and a creativity that leads to startling and often unexpected results.
Over the years, dozens of clients have hired Tat to subtly or radically transform the sound of their music, and take it into a special sonic place. Here are some examples:
Light of Stars – The House Jacks. With just 5 voices and a relatively simple, homogenous arrangement throughout, this track really came alive after Tat’s radical retreatment, adding shimmering, hypnotic textures, insect-like sound effects and ambient-style filtering into the mix. On hearing the mix, Deke Sharon (producer of NBC’s The Sing Off) exclaimed “T2 rocks my world! There is really, really, really no reason not to send him a track. His work on the new House Jacks tracks was sensational.”

Breathe In – The Chordials. An ambitious arrangement needed creative sound design to capture the ethereal essence of the Imogen Heap original. In addition, executive producer James Cannon wanted a different, more driving beat, and the bridge of the song to evoke “a crazy, bad acid trip”. Tat took all this in his stride, combining a Madonna-inspired, dry drum beat with a huge, expansive, filtered bridge including tolling bell-tones and warped, swooping vocals. This melding of wildly disparate yet unified elements caught the ear of critics: Joseph Bates (RARB.org) singled out the track, commenting simply that “None of the mixing tops Breathe In on Arrival.”
The Walk – Divisi. The brief from executive producer Peter Hollens was simple – “Do your Tat thing!” Tat happily obliged, coating the vocals with a subtle metallic sheen, and dressing the track with epic drumrolls, vocoded speech, and pulsating trance synths, to create a soundscape that is futuristic and digital, but still retaining warmth and humanity. This track was featured on BOCA 2009, and Jonathan Minkoff (RARB.org) described it as “a near perfect combination of arranging, studio trickery and raw vocal talent. Rarely does a group capture the power of an original, much less the dynamic quality of an artist like Imogen Heap…. studio perfection.” The client’s response? A simple “You rock!”
